Since February 2022, the law applies to every home in Scotland — rented and owner-occupied. When one alarm sounds, they all sound.
A smoke alarm in every circulation space on each storey.
A heat alarm — not smoke — in the kitchen, ceiling mounted.
A CO detector wherever there’s a carbon-fuelled appliance or flue.

We survey the property, supply compliant alarms from trusted brands, position and install them correctly, prove the interlink works and issue certification confirming the property meets the standard.
Both routes to compliance are available: sealed long-life battery alarms that interlink wirelessly (no rewiring, ideal for occupied properties), or mains-wired systems where that suits the property better. We’ll recommend the most cost-effective compliant option, not the biggest job.
Worth knowing:
- Alarm units have a finite life — typically ten years — and the replacement date is recorded on your certificate
- Existing compliant systems can be tested and certified without replacement
- For rented homes, alarm compliance is part of the Repairing Standard

Alarm FAQs
Straight answers on the alarm standard.
My alarms are battery powered — do they comply?
Standalone battery alarms don’t meet the standard. Sealed long-life battery alarms that interlink with each other do. If yours are interlinked and correctly positioned, we can test and certify what’s already fitted.
Do I need a carbon monoxide detector?
Yes wherever there’s a carbon-fuelled appliance — a gas boiler, fire or stove — or a flue. CO detectors don’t need to be interlinked with the fire alarms unless combined units are used.
How long does installation take?
Most homes are completed in a single short visit. Wireless interlinked alarms involve no rewiring, so there’s minimal disruption and no redecorating.
What does it cost?
It depends on the number of alarms the property needs — a typical package starts around £170. You’ll get an exact fixed price before anything is booked.
